Signs of a faulty alternator

The alternators are essential for the functioning of the motor. They are small generators that keep the battery charged and provide energy to the spark plugs and other electrical accessories in the vehicle. These generators do not last forever and there are ways to see if the alternator is faulty to prevent the passengers remain delayed.

Accessories lighting or reduced speed

Normally, when you turn on any accessories such as dashboard lights, radio beacons or the accessory is indirectly powered by the alternator, which keeps the battery charged. When the alternator is defective, it cannot generate enough electricity to operate all electrical accessories in its full capacity. The dashboard and headlights can then be relaxed beacons may operate more slowly and the stereo cannot work.

Start the car by pushing

The generator is responsible for maintaining high the battery. When working properly, the battery voltage may drop too low to start the car. If you discover that your car has needed lately be started by pushing or often remains completely immobilized, then the alternator may be the culprit.

Warning Light

Most vehicles have a warning light somewhere on the dash that indicates the battery life. If this light comes on, the battery is fairly new and keeps the load when you measure, and you discarded electrical shorts, then the problem may be the alternator.

Noise

There are several parts that rotate so as to produce electric current inside the alternator. When these parts wear out or break, the result is noise. Usually sounds like a rattle or clang. Listen carefully when the alternator is running to see if you can detect any unusual sound.

Voltmeter test

A voltmeter is a device that measures the voltage potential in a circuit. When you put a voltmeter on a battery with all accessories running, the voltage should not drop below 13 volts. When accessories are off, look for a voltage between 14 and 14.4 volts. Any value below is a sign that the alternator is not producing enough power.

Considerations

The battery, alternator and voltage regulator all working together to properly maintain energized electrical components of the car.It can be expensive to replace the alternator if the battery or regulator is really the problem as he tries to prove these parts separately to find which component is failing. Also remember that although a faulty alternator needs quick attention, a good battery can probably take you home or to a shop without too much trouble; no need to panic. If you think the alternator is failing, connects the fewest accessories possible, avoid driving at night (you’ll need to use the headlights, which require energy), and do not drive anywhere unless it is an emergency.
