Changing the fuel filter on a Freestyle

According to the manufacturer Freestyle, i.e. with the Ford Motor Company, you should replace the fuel filter every 15,000 miles (24.1401 km) made ​​to keep the system free of debris. The fuel filter has a specific function is to remove dirt from the fuel before the engine reaches. Once the filter becomes clogged or filled with dirt, no longer allows fuel to pass through it successfully. Then the engine will not start your Freestyle and also excessively contaminated filter can damage the fuel injectors.

Instructions

  1. Raise the hood of your Freestyle and locate the power distribution box in the engine compartment. The rectangular box is in front of the battery. Lift the tab at the top of the cover up and remove the cover. Inside the cover, you’ll see a numbered diagram showing the position of each of the relays in the center.
  2. Search on the relay diagram number 53. This will be the fuel pump your Freestyle. Find that number (53) next to the relays connected to the power distribution center. Remove the relay of the fuel pump with a pair of pliers to relay extractor. Place the clamp around the body of the relay and pull it upright; not pervert relay.
  3. Start the engine as you normally would and leave it on. Once the engine stops, is on again. The engine should turn off quickly. Try restarting the Freestyle, again, but should not be started because you’ve exhausted the fuel pressure. Turn the ignition to the lock, remove the key and apply the emergency brake.
  4. Remove the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Lift the Freestyle with a hydraulic lift on the rear driver’s side wheel. Place a bracket to the right of the hydraulic lift to help keep the vehicle up.
  5. Slide your Freestyle under the rear bumper. You should immediately see the general fuel tank, exhaust pipe and muffler. At 12 o’clock in front of the fuel tank, facing the engine, you should see the fuel filter. It has a metal tube connected to both sides of it and it looks like a can, but smaller.
  6. Keep the body to the right instead of mounting the fuel filter. Place a metal drip pan under the fuel filter. Note the small black arrow and the direction you point the fuel filter housing. You must reinstall the new filter in the same direction.
  7. First remove the fuel line filter from the driver’s side. Push in on the top of the quick-connect fitting on the fuel line and pull out. Remove the fuel line on the passenger side the same way. Both tubes can have residual fuel therein. Let drain in the tray.
  8. Loosen the clamp bolt holding the old fuel filter in place with a socket wrench. Extracts the old filter and install the new one in its place. Tighten the screw on the filter using a clamp with a socket wrench.
  9. Connect the fuel lines to the new filter. Install the fuel line driver side first. Place the quick-connect fitting on the nozzle of the filter and push it forward until it snaps into place. Connect the fuel line on the passenger side the same way.
  10. Remove the metal tray and place it in a safe place if you have fuel. Remove the bracket and then down the elevator to the ground Freestyle. Plug the relay number 53, ie fuel pump, again in the power distribution center by hand. Push down on the relay instead. You can do it with two fingers.
  11. Connect and secure the negative back to the battery with a socket wrench cable. Close the lid on the power distribution center and close the hood of the Freestyle.

Tips and Warnings

  • It can take four to six attempts to start the engine because the fuel pressure has to be built again.
  • Do not do this repair in a closed garage, near flames or near electronic connections such as cell phones and other devices. The gas fumes are dangerous if inhaled and are also highly flammable.
